With its distinctive red water wheel, The Wayside Inn Grist Mill is one of the most photographed historic structures in the area. The mill was built by Henry Ford in 1929 as an educational facility in recognition of the importance of milling throughout history. The first cornmeal was ground on Thanksgiving Day that year. The mill stands near the location of the original early-1700s Howe family grist mill.Today, the mill is used for grinding cornmeal and whole wheat flour used in the baked goods and famous muffins served at Longfellow’s Wayside Inn. A little-known fun fact is that Pepperidge Farm used to grind flour at The Wayside Inn Grist Mill for their baked products and the mill even inspired the company’s logo still used today.
Over the last few months, The Wayside Inn was pleased to make the mill grounds available to the public free of charge so that people could get a respite from staying indoors. The Wayside Inn saw many new visitors, dog walkers, and families enjoying the trails and grassy areas. Now, however, The Grist Mill area could use some care. Proceeds from the auction will support a variety of activities ranging from maintenance of the grounds, preservation of the building, and updated educational projects that will promote awareness about the mill’s history and the science and technology employed to run the mill works.
As a nonprofit organization, The Wayside Inn Foundation receives no regular funding from the town of Sudbury, the state of Massachusetts, or any federal monies for its operations or property maintenance and instead relies on donations, grants, and bequests to carry out its mission. Participation in the summer auction will help The Wayside Inn Foundation accomplish necessary work to preserve the Grist Mill and ensure that it is able to be enjoyed by many.
