In August 2013, Buddy Dog Humane Society, Inc. purchased a 9.5 acre property on Wayside Inn Road, abutting The Wayside Inn Historic Site. Although no plans have been formally disclosed, it is expected that Buddy Dog intends to build a new facility on this property, where it will relocate from its current location on Boston Post Road in Sudbury.
As another non-profit organization, the Board of Trustees acknowledges the important role and charitable mission of Buddy Dog as a premiere humane society in the greater MetroWest community, providing shelter and suitable homes for dogs and cats.
For hundreds of years, guests from near and far have come to The Wayside Inn for meals, lodging, weddings, picnics and other special events to enjoy its unique, bucolic and historic setting. While we wholeheartedly support Buddy Dog’s mission, the Board of Trustees of the Wayside Inn was not involved in the purchase of the property by Buddy Dog, nor was the Board’s approval sought or required.
As trustees of Longfellow’s Wayside Inn, the Board is duty-bound to act in the best interest of the Inn to protect its historic structures and its 125 acre campus. To this end, the Board desires that all properties surrounding the Inn be developed and operated in a manner that preserves the important peaceful character, historic quality, and rural nature of The Wayside Inn Historic Site.
It is our desire to have the Town of Sudbury, its relevant departments, the community, and neighboring property owners, work together to address the interests of all parties in the development or operation of a new Buddy Dog facility on Wayside Inn Road. The Wayside Inn, for its part, intends to have an active role in preserving the essential qualities of The Wayside Inn Historic Site.
